The 'Go Faster Gleam'

It’s that time of year again – daffodils, Easter eggs, holidays and… putting the boat back in the water. At least, that’s what happens in our house.

Forget jetting off to sunny climes, or relaxing in front of the telly with a good book. Nope. Easter time with the Sailing Fanatic is a fun-filled adventure, packed to the gunnels with activities such as the ‘Young Pirate Scrubbing The Decks Till They Shine Race’, won by the Far Too Keen Junior Sailor (age 10), and the famous ‘Polishing The Winches Competition’, won this year by the ‘Do I have to, Dad?’ Sailor (age 7 ¼).

You’ll be glad to know that the ‘Let’s Drip Cleaning Solution Down The Hull That It Took The Other Sailing Fanatic A Day To Anti-Foul Award’ went to our hero – the Sailing Fanatic – while I was the proud recipient of the ‘2007 Standing On Top Of A Dodgy Ladder To Polish The Hull Without Swearing Too Much Prize.’ And I earned it, I can tell you!

But it was all worth it in the end; the boat shone where it was supposed to shine, and looked blue where it was supposed to look blue. Even the Sailing Fanatic was happy.

It’s his new strategy, you see. Who needs new sails when you can have a go-faster gleam? With the amount of polish that has been lavished on the boat over the holiday, Sea Dreamer will not simply sail through the water at the Scottish Series – the waves will part around her.

So it was a satisfied Sailing Fanatic who sauntered back down the pontoons after safely berthing his boat. Satisfied, that is, until he spotted the brand-new, sleek and gleaming Harmony 42 strategically placed opposite the pontoon entrance.

‘Very nice!' said the Sailing Fanatic, a gleam in his eye. ‘Just think how fast we could go in that!'
