3. The following sequence is one of those things that is often seen - but only by others. James is in full flow, the sun is setting, and Ailsa Craig is coming into view.
James was just telling us of stories about Ballantrae, which I dare not repeat. However the outline of Ailsa Craig, as seen from Ayr on the north, or from Ballantrae on the south, has a sugar-loaf appearance, but from the opposite coast of Girvan, this outline is flattened into the shape of a huge tea-cosy. It has a nickname of Paddy's Milestone, no doubt for the same reason we watched out for it. A firm marker for the return to Scotland.
As we motored past it changed shape. And the sun went down. I thought we might be treated to a sunset over Ailsa Craig.
