5.   At last the sun went down, and treated us to a firey end.

As ever this brought on the thoughts for the night ahead. The dusk was long, and we were running short on fuel so the debate turned to whether we would stop at Troon, Ardrossan, or continue to Largs. Fortunately the forecast breeze answered that question.

It started gently at first and made for a pleasant sail north. The wind built up and by the time we reached Ardrossan we were storming along, with full main and number 2. Prudence then took hold as the wind increased, and the main came down altogether.

At last the familiar lights of Hunterston and Largs came into view, and at 3am we motored into Largs Marina.
