A rope clutch

3.   The stresses and strains of a yacht are huge - and without some important devices sailing a boat so big with so few people would be impossible.

One of the more important pieces of equipment is the rope clutch. This image is taken from a patent.

A rope clutch

The basic operation of a clutch is that when the lever is down, as shown in the diagram, the clutch is locked and the rope will hold. To release the clutch you lift the lever. However the rope will not be released when the lever is lifted. The lever needs to be pused all the way forwards.

Often there will be much cursing and swearing because a rope is jammed somewhere, when in fact the clutch has not been fully released.
