The stern gland packing

4.   This is the stern gland packing. It is difficult to explain - so here is a picture!

The packing itself is usually just rope - although special rope. It can be made from yarn impregnated with petroleum jelly and coated with flake graphite prior to plating.

The stern gland packing

Packing comes either as 'traditional' greased or waxed flax, or a more modern Teflon impregnated packing. It is available either ready-cut into pre-sized rings of various sizes to suit different boxes, or as continuous square sided rope also in various thicknesses to match the clearance between shaft and stuffing box body.
